The Culture of the Isle of Wight

Many people visit the Isle of Wight for their holiday, but they don't all take the time to see everything there. Sometimes, that's because they don't have a good understanding of the culture. Knowing about the culture on the Isle of Wight can make anyone's holiday more interesting. The culture there is similar to the culture found in the South of England, but yet it's distinctive enough to be called its own, as well.

On the Isle of Wight, literature abounds. Alfred, Lord Tennyson had ties to the island, and many poets and authors have either been born there, died there, or made it their home throughout part or most of their life. Films have been made and books have been set on the Isle of Wight, as well, so there's always something going on. When people come to the Isle of Wight for a holiday and they don't know about the strong literary ties to the island, it can be very easy for them to ignore sites that they might have really enjoyed. If they don't know what's there, it's difficult to go and see it.

Painting was another important way that the culture of the Isle of Wight was shaped. There was a school on the island that specialized in romantic painters. Most of them focused on painting views depicting the South West Coast. George Morland and JMW Turner studied there, as did other painters. If you're going to be on the Isle of Wight on your holiday, take time to appreciate the great art that has come from that area. Look around at the paintings, take in the museums, and immerse yourself in the culture of the area so that you can enjoy the entire Isle of Wight experience and not miss anything.

Taking pictures is a popular cultural activity on the Isle of Wight, because there's so much beauty there. It almost begs for a camera. Whether you're a professional shutterbug or whether you just like taking photographs of the places you've been, there are plenty of photo opportunities on the Isle of Wight. You can also visit the prominent photography museums available on the Isle of Wight so you can get inspiration for the kinds of pictures you may aspire to take.

No matter what you decide to see while on the Isle of Wight, keeping the culture of the area in mind is a great way to ensure that you see everything on the island that's valuable and meaningful to you. That can help make a much more memorable holiday experience for you and all of your travelling companions. Seeing the sights is always fun, but it means more when you've got a little bit of history behind them.
