What is a Social Media Manager?

So you've probably heard a lot of buzz lately about a new job title called a social media manager and wondered what exactly a SMM does & what is his or her role within an organisation.

The core of the job entails managing the social media properties of a business, for example a businesses twitter account, Facebook page or linked in account. The role of the SMM is to engage with the businesses followers & effectively communicate the companies message to them. This involves building a strong & responsive relationship with followers & engaging in conversation with them.

Of course the primary role of any kind of marketing and this includes social marketing is to increase sales & profits. For an online business it's easy to use metrics, tracking & testing to calculate the effectiveness of the SMM. Sales & leads can be tracked from the social media site quite easily.

But offline businesses can also use a SMM, not just for increased brand recognition but also as a direct marketing tool. Using incentives like vouchers or money off coupons only available on their social sites an offline business can track the effectiveness of its campaign.

The SMM should also be actively seeking out new followers for the organisations social media properties. This may involve engaging with groups or individuals who would have an interest in the organisations niche or industry & promoting the companies social sites to them,

In conclusion good social media manager will increase the organisations followers on their social sites, develop relationships, increase brand awareness & help convert followers to customers.
