Collectors of bookmarks collect the detachable or separate bookmarks that have been produced from the mid 19th century. The early ones being silk or other textiles and simply in ribbon form, copying the previously used attached versions. The first bookmarks were attached to the spine of the book. It is hard to believe the individuals did not use very thin object, like paper or card as bookmarks prior to the time that historians agree represented the first bookmarks.

The vintage bookmarks will almost certainly need to be acquired through searching old garage sales and estate sales. Often they will be inside a book, and the book will need to be purchased. Bookmarks are also on sale through online auction site and online stores. Make sure in all cases that the seller is reputable and that the product is correctly displayed. Always ask for a photograph if unsure. The proper value of a vintage bookmark is often difficult to determine, as they can be in a used condition and they are not normally dated, so do the research to be sure. Join an online collectors forum and ask the questions.

Contemporary bookmarks can be purchased from any number of stores, like bookshops, supermarkets, libraries, second-hand stores and online. Some online sites even provide designs that can be printed on a standard home printer for free.
